HAPPY Difference

The HAPPY Difference

What’s Different about the Philosophy of HAPPY?

Children need specific experiences to help them fall in love with books.

Children need to believe they are part of a family of learners, both at home and at school.

Children need to be rewarded for their effort with books, no matter the starting point and regardless of how far they progress, so that they will internalize the love for reading.

Parents need to be inspired to be their children’s first and best teachers.
Parents need training in how to be effective teachers and tutors for their own kids, regardless of their educational background.

Parents need access to information and opportunities to advance their own academic achievement and life goals.

Educators need to know that every child has gifts and every child can achieve.
Educators need to respect students and parents of all cultural backgrounds in ways the families will recognize.
Educators need to expect and to model excellence, devoid of negative judgments.

Schools need to allow the community to be part of the learning process.

Schools need make the arts and artistic expression an intrinsic part of learning.

Schools need to teach to each child’s strengths while striving together towards the child’s potential.

Communities need to come to the aid of each child, since they are all our children.
Communities need to consistently show children they care by assisting both children and their families in traditional and non-traditional ways.
Communities need to imagine and create opportunities both in and out of school for every child to feel successful at something.

Programs need to work responsibly within the school schedule and requirements.
Programs need to partner for greater efficiency and support of shared values.
Programs need to balance wisely the need to be open to new approaches and the need to patiently allow results from existing strategies in bringing out the best in children and families.

Everyone needs to appreciate that learning is fun and all the more joyful when we are learning together.
